Let the Colt Brennan for Heisman hype begin!

USA Today leaps off the starting blocks to discuss the huge season expected from Hawaii QB Colt Brennan in the fall.

I fully expect Brennan to throw for 50 TDs and 5000 yards - the only negatives that I see are the loss of a couple offensive lineman and stud RB Nate Ilaoa. USA Today astutely points out some scheduling issues that won’t help either.

Stay tuned - the Fantasy College Blitz crew and I are working on our own special brand of promotion for this very campaign.

Rivals.com’s QB Power Rankings

Rivals and SI.com have posted their QB rankings for 2007 and our boy Colt Brennan is number one on their list:

How many more records can he break next season?

His return should help Louisville deal with all its other changes.
3. John David Booty USC Sr. 6-3/215 Shreveport, LA
His Rose Bowl effort made him a Heisman favorite.
4. Chad Henne Michigan Sr. 6-2/224 Wyomissing, PA
He will direct arguably the most star-studded offense in the nation.
5. Pat White West Virginia Jr. 6-2/190 Daphne, AL
White and Steve Slaton are the best one-two punch in the game.
6. Erik Ainge Tennessee Sr. 6-6/220 Hillsboro, OR
Tennessee fans are hoping his knee will recover quickly.
7. Colt McCoy Texas So. 6-3/195 Tuscola, TX
He went from afterthought to folk hero in less than a year.
8. Graham Harrell Texas Tech Jr. 6-3/197 Ennis, TX
That Insight Bowl rally is a sign of good things to come.
9. Andre’ Woodson Kentucky Sr. 6-5/230 Radcliff, KY
He was the most prolific passer in the SEC last year.
10. Matt Ryan Boston College Sr. 6-5/215 Exton, PA
BC is one of the few ACC teams without quarterback concerns.

Pretty solid list, though the names on there aren’t too exciting. There’s no Troy Smith or Brady Quinn out there this year, but those then guys all have the chance to blow up this year into household names. Brennan has the ability to break all kinds of records and should be a Heisman favorite from the throughout the season.

SMQ Sits Down With: Colt Brennan

Over the past two seasons, Hawaii’s Colt Brennan has established himself as one of the most prolific passers in NCAA history, riding the run and shoot to a record 58 touchdown passes this fall, culminating in a five-touchdown second half in Hawaii’s comeback win over Arizona State in the Hawaii Bowl on Christmas Eve. The former Colorado walk-on, once accused of rape and eventually convicted of breaking and entering and trespassing in Boulder, has 93 touchdowns in two seasons since transferring to Honolulu. After Brennan threw for three touchdowns to beat Purdue in November, the city’s mayor, Mufi Hannemann, declared Colt would beat him in an election, hands down.

Wednesday, Brennan reversed an earlier decision to enter April’s NFL Draft, withdrawing his name and pledging another season in the islands. SMQ flew to O’ahu this week to talk with the quarterback about his checkered past, overcoming obstacles and perceptions, record books and why he couldn’t give up the life of a star in paradise. […]

Colt Brennan Returning to Hawaii for Senior Season

Colt Brennan is staying at HawaiiGood news for the University of Hawaii (and for this website), Colt Brennan has withdrawn his name from the NFL Draft and will return to school for his senior season. He filed the paperwork Monday to give himself a little more time but he’s decided another year at Hawaii is in his best interest.

Below are some quotes from Brennan’s press conference:

“I know what I’m passing up,” Brennan said at a news conference. “My heart lies right here in Hawaii.”

“I like being out here,” Brennan said. “It just felt right to stay. I want to keep helping this program. And I know that one more year will help prepare me for the NFL draft. By next year I’ll be that much better.”

“I like the person I’m becoming in Hawaii. I want to give back to a school that gave back to me,” he said.

“My future in the NFL will have nothing to do with where I get drafted. It will have everything to do with what I do after I get drafted.,” he said.

Great attitude about things from Brennan as I’m sure it was a difficult decision. The Warriors fans are definitely excited to have him back and he’s clearly touched by that.

Probably a good decision both in the long and short-term for Colt. He’ll have another year of college fun and another year in beautiful Hawaii, and another year to improve his game on the field while proving to NFL coaches that his off field troubles are a thing of the past.
