Rivals.com’s QB Power Rankings

Rivals and SI.com have posted their QB rankings for 2007. Colt McCoy is their seventh best:

Rank Name School Year Ht./Wt. Hometown
1. Colt Brennan Hawaii Sr. 6-3/205 Irvine, CA
How many more records can he break next season?
2. Brian Brohm Louisville Sr. 6-4/224 Louisville, KY
His return should help Louisville deal with all its other changes.
3. John David Booty USC Sr. 6-3/215 Shreveport, LA
His Rose Bowl effort made him a Heisman favorite.
4. Chad Henne Michigan Sr. 6-2/224 Wyomissing, PA
He will direct arguably the most star-studded offense in the nation.
5. Pat White West Virginia Jr. 6-2/190 Daphne, AL
White and Steve Slaton are the best one-two punch in the game.
6. Erik Ainge Tennessee Sr. 6-6/220 Hillsboro, OR
Tennessee fans are hoping his knee will recover quickly.
7. Colt McCoy Texas So. 6-3/195 Tuscola, TX
He went from afterthought to folk hero in less than a year.
8. Graham Harrell Texas Tech Jr. 6-3/197 Ennis, TX
That Insight Bowl rally is a sign of good things to come.
9. Andre’ Woodson Kentucky Sr. 6-5/230 Radcliff, KY
He was the most prolific passer in the SEC last year.
10. Matt Ryan Boston College Sr. 6-5/215 Exton, PA
BC is one of the few ACC teams without quarterback concerns.

I’m not sure I’d put Colt that far down on the list. John David Booty came on at the end of the year but he didn’t overly impress me. Chad Henne had a solid freshman year but he’s hoping he can put up a season as good as McCoy’s last year. Pat White is an amazing athlete but he’s so average as a passer that I can’t put him up high on a list of QB’s.

McCoy and Charles bulking up for 2007 season

Colt McCoy is bulking upHopefully all this bulking up Colt McCoy is doing keeps him on the field:

His teammates joke that they notice new biceps on Texas quarterback Colt McCoy more than ever before.

A buffed-up McCoy might still bear a striking resemblance to the title character of “Malcolm in the Middle,” even at a hulkish 210 pounds. But McCoy said the added weight should have him better prepared for his second season as the Longhorns’ starter.

“I need to be,” McCoy said. “I’m tired of being thrown around and I don’t want to get hurt again. I spent a lot of time in the weight room to get ready for the season. Everybody has.”

I worry about him getting too big and too stiff out there. We want him mobile enough that he can avoid a hit or two as well. Hopefully the development of backups Sherrod Harris and John Chiles as a dual threat option at QB can give Colt a few breaks.

After stellar season Texas counting on Colt McCoy

Texas quarterback Colt McCoy was a young pup on a team full of veterans last season and still was a leader by the end of the season. This offseason McCoy is bulking up to better last through a tough Big 12 season and growing as a leader as well:

Having immersed himself in the weight room since last season, the 6-foot-3 McCoy, listed at 195 pounds last fall (up from 175 as a high-school senior) is now up to 208, and it shows. “His face still looks like he’s 19,” said Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis, “but his body is starting to look like a real man.”

Those who have watched Texas’ spring workouts so far, however, say the biggest change in McCoy isn’t physical. With the departure of a large, senior class synonymous with that ‘05 championship team, McCoy has emerged as the ‘Horns’ unquestioned on-field leader. “He’s gotten more aggressive in his conversations,” said Texas coach Mack Brown. “They know he’s ‘the guy.’ They trust him.”

Colt and his receivers should be in for a big season next year as they’ve now had a full two years working together. This team lost a lot of senior leadership on the offensive line and will need McCoy to pick up the slack. Sounds like he’ll be up to the task.

Colt McCoy Named to Freshman All-America Team

Texas quarterback Colt McCoy is starting to pick up postseason honors. Today it was announced that he was named to the Scripps Freshman All-America Team by the Football Writers Association of America.

Redshirt freshman QB Colt McCoy has been named to the 2006 Scripps Freshman All-America Team, the Football Writers Association of America has announced. McCoy was on of three unanimous selections to the team, including Wisconsin RB P.J. Hill and Alabama LB Prince Hall.

Congrats to Colt on what I’m sure will be just one of many awards he’ll pick up over his career.

SI.com 2006 Breakout Players

SI.com thinks Colt McCoy was one of 2006’s breakout players. They profile him and 30+ others as the year’s biggest new athletes from all sports:

Strong performances in preseason camp earned McCoy the starting job, but mature decisions and big wins over the likes of Oklahoma and Nebraska helped ingratiate the red-shirt freshman with Longhorns fans who were still longing for Vince Young.

Longhorn fans are hoping 2006 was just the beginning for McCoy.

CFN Names Colt McCoy Their Big 12 Player of the Year

College Football News has announced their Big 12 conference awards and Texas QB Colt McCoy is their Big 12 Player of the Year.

If someone had told you at the beginning of the year that Colt McCoy wouldn’t just be an adequate replacement for Vince Young, but would step into the pressure and the spotlight to become the Big 12’s most efficient passer completing 68% of his throws with 27 touchdown passes and seven interceptions, you’d have sold Longhorn fans tickets to Glendale for January 8th. Overlooking that he was banged up over the last two games and wasn’t nearly 100% in the three-interception loss to Texas A&M to close out the year, McCoy was poised, steady, and extremely productive playing like a veteran right out of the gate.

Definitely deserving of the honor McCoy played like a veteran and had the best season of any player in the conference.

Longhorn Fan Threatens Flutie Over McCoy Injury

There’s apparently an incredibly superstitious and psychotic Longhorn fan making threats to Doug Flutie and his family. The “fan” lives in California (figures) and believes Flutie’s comments before the game that Texas could only lose if Colt McCoy got hurt jinxed the Horns and caused the upset loss to Kansas State.

“We have intentions of finding this person and speaking to this person,” said [police Lt. Paul] Shastany. “As threats go, it’s a pretty serious incident.”

Although the exact nature of the threat was not disclosed, the man, who investigators believe lives in California, wrote, “You jinxed the Longhorn faithful and a chance at the national title,” Shastany said.

“He was upset, wishing bad will and speaking badly about his family,” said Shastany. “At this point, the information is disconcerting enough to follow this up the best we can.”

There’s lots of blame to go around for the loss, but if we’re pointing fingers and making threats Doug Flutie is probably the last guy on my list. Hopefully they catch this guy, anybody that threatens a guy’s family needs to be locked up for a long time.
